All About the Research Triangle Park

Have you heard the news? Apple is opening its east coast campus, and it’s happening in our backyard! The tech giant is investing $1 billion in a brand new campus at the Research Triangle Park, bringing 3,000 highly paying new jobs to the region.

Apple chose the Triangle for many reasons new residents do: its proximity to major universities, favorable living costs, and high population of skilled workers. The Research Triangle Park is a natural location for a tech company. If you’re moving to the Triangle and looking for a job in STEM, it could be a great place for you too!

History and About the RTP

Originally built in 1959, the RTP was envisioned as an unincorporated area between NC’s major universities, constructed with the goal of attracting innovative companies to the region and diversifying the economy. It is easily accessed from Interstate 40 and the Durham Freeway.

Though originally designed for business and research use, the RTP’s growing prominence means that other types of development are occurring there as well. The 15,000 square foot RTP Boxyard, inspired by similar areas in Tulsa and London, the Boxyard uses former shipping containers as affordable spaces for local small businesses. The result is a unique mixed-use area with distinct architecture that gives the park its first “fun” area, open to both RTP workers and the public.

Who’s at the RTP?

The RTP has attracted a number of high profile tenants over the years, including:

·       Cisco Systems: with a campus at the RTP that employs 5,000 people, it’s the second largest center of operations for the company outside of Silicon Valley.

·       GlaxoSmithKline: the international pharmaceutical company operates a 5,000-employee R&D center at the park.

·       IBM: one of the park’s veteran tenants, IBM employs nearly 10,000 people at the RTP.

·       Fidelity Investments: notable for being a non-STEM company, Fidelity’s RTP location employs 3,100 people.
