Day Trips from Downtown Durham
Considering a move to NC? We don’t blame you. Not to brag, but it’s not often to find a state with so much variety so close to home. While certainly cool enough on its own, Downtown Durham’s central location puts you within a day’s travel of some of the best spots the Old North State has to offer!
When you move to the Vega, day trips across the state are simple and easy. Here are some of our favorite ways to get out of town.
To the Mountains
The Blue Ridge Mountains run along the western edge of North Carolina. Some of the oldest mountains in the world, the Blue Ridge gets its name from the blue hue of the fog that collects in its valleys. Outdoor activities abound, from hiking to boating to rock climbing.
If you want something a little less rugged, consider Asheville, sometimes called the San Francisco of the East Coast. Only a few hours from Durham, Asheville’s beer and art scenes are legendary around the US.
To the Beach
Want to see the Atlantic from the NC shore? You have two primary options: the coast or the Outer Banks. Wilmington is arguably the most popular coastal destination; check out its downtown for nightlife and dining, and then head to nearby Wrightsville Beach for a sunny day with a bohemian vibe. Wilmington is around two hours from Durham.
The Outer Banks are one of the most unique landscapes in America, a long strip of barrier islands jutting out into the Atlantic. Their location makes them a bit out of reach for a day trip – around 4 hours – but the journey is worth it.
To Other Cities
If you somehow run out of things to do in Downtown Durham, NC’s other cities are all within a few hours drive. There’s Greensboro, a pivotal city in the Civil Rights movement with a great museum documenting its history. Charlotte’s sprawling midtown area is host to the best nightlife in North Carolina at its Epicentre, a multi-story shopping and club complex. And of course, Raleigh and its museums – including the Museum of Natural Sciences – are right down the road.
