Durham in the Fall
Though you might not know it from the heat, the end of summer is quickly approaching in the Triangle. Soon we’ll be enjoying sweater weather, crunchy leaves, and other autumn trappings as 2021 winds down. As one of the cultural centers of North Carolina, Durham and the surrounding areas offer lots of great ways to enjoy the most beautiful season of the year! Here are some of our favorites.
The North Carolina State Fair
Finally back in action after taking 2020 off for the COVID-19 pandemic, the NC State Fair returns for 2021! Located just south in neighboring Raleigh, the NC State Fair runs in late October just as it has since 1853. Attendance regularly approaches one million people, filling the fairgrounds’ 344 acres.
In addition to fair staples – rides, unholy deep fried food, games – the NC State Fair’s proximity to NC State University and its renowned agricultural program keeps it closely tied to its farming roots. You’ll see a horse show, antique machinery, tractor pulling, and more. There are also fireworks each night.
Pumpkin Patches and Corn Mazes
Looking to decorate for the fall? Durham offers pumpkin patches great and small. If you’re looking to stay downtown, the Durham Farmer’s Market can bring pumpkins to your doorstep, though kids may have more fun at the Museum of Life and Science’s Pumpkin Patch Express.
If you want the full corn maze experience, you’ll need to travel out of town – but not far. We recommend you head north past Hillsborough to McKee Cornfield Maze. The huge 12 acre maze changes every year. If you’re intimidated, they upload the design every year before opening – but still, don’t count on it being a cakewalk.
Fall Sports
NC basketball is what makes the headlines nationally, but college football is still a big deal in the Old North State, and the Triangle is where the biggest games happen. The area’s big three universities – NC State, UNC Chapel Hill, and Duke – all have renowned football teams playing games throughout the season. The tailgating is also a sight to behold, especially if you know a student who can show you around!
With a thriving arts scene, great dining, and convenient location, Downtown Durham is one of the most popular areas to live in North Carolina. The Vega, a new building of luxurious condominiums, is one of its hottest addresses! Our units range from one to three bedrooms, all of which feature modern interiors and terraces with a view of the city. Contact us today – units are selling fast!
