Durham Neighborhoods: A Partial Overview

Durham, North Carolina is a microcosm of the state’s history as a whole, a product of the intersection of the industrial revolution and sweeping social change over the 20th century. The city’s history is quite visible in its neighborhoods; some locals have identified over 25 distinct neighborhoods within city limits!

Here we’ve identified some of the city’s most distinct or interesting neighborhoods!

Old North Durham

Sitting just north of W Geer St, Old North Durham has had quite a history. Originally a middle-class neighborhood with long-standing families, the area saw a decline during the 80s and 90s. Thanks to a number of revitalization projects, the area is now a quirky collection of renovated buildings. Chief among them are Motorco Music Hall and Fullsteam Brewery, both staples of Durham nightlife. Residents there are dedicated to maintaining its unique vibe.

Bragtown

For a long time, Bragtown was considered separate from Durham – the area even had its own Christmas parade well into the 1950s. Annexation occurred in 1957, but you can still see shades of its unique identity: old brick facades, bungalows, vintage storefronts. Today the area is a nexus for Durham’s Latinx community.

Southside

Southside Durham has a complicated history. Once a thriving black neighborhood – home to sit-in protests similar to those in nearby Greensboro – Southside and nearby Hayti were forever changed with construction of the Durham freeway. Modern efforts are underway to revitalize the area, including mixed-income housing and mixed-use real estate for businesses. Many of the area’s historical landmarks are still preserved, such as St. Joseph’s AME Church – an important center of the Civil Rights movement in Durham.

Brightleaf Square

One of the most beloved Bull City neighborhoods by locals and tourists alike, Brightleaf stands on the grounds of a former tobacco plant. Its current form came around in the early 80s as a hub for shopping and dining, serving as a major driver for Downtown Durham’s revitalization over the next few decades. Today, the area’s walkability, brick-and-greenery aesthetic and broad selection of businesses make it a key part of Durham’s identity.
