Durham's Best Patios and Rooftop Bars

Summer in North Carolina may be winding to a close, but patio season will last throughout the fall. With truly cold temperatures not kicking in until the end of October, you’ve got plenty of time left to explore Durham’s best patios and rooftop bars. Some would argue that August and September are actually the region’s best months for dining and drinking al fresco – with the hottest days of the summer behind us, enjoy the uniquely Durham vibes at our favorite patios and rooftop bars:

Bull McCabe’s Irish Pub

427 W Main St

There’s perhaps no better place to spend a sunny afternoon than on the patio at Bull McCabe’s. Located right in the heart of downtown Durham, the traditional Irish pub features a sprawling lawn with picnic tables, games, and plenty of space for kids and dogs to run around. The pub’s central location makes it ideal for people watching. Stop for a cold one as you wander through the city’s best boutiques and galleries. The food is great, too!

Geer Street Garden

644 Foster St

If rain is in the forecast but you’re still eager to be outside, Geer Street Garden’s covered patio is the way to go. The former gas station is oozing with old Southern charm. Once a dilapidated brick building, the restaurant is now a cozy place to catch up with friends. The food here can’t be beat – we recommend the chicken and dumplings and their tamales. Drinks are must here, too; Whiskey Business combines habanero bourbon with fresh ginger, ginger ale, and lemon.

Mad Hatter’s Cafe + Bakeshop

1802 W Main St

This lively cafe is the perfect place to work or catch up with friends over a cup of joe. The patio is reminiscent of a coffee shop you’d see in Paris, complete with adorable cafe tables and greenery. Atmosphere is everything, and there’s no shortage of good vibes here. Whether you’re stopping in for a caffeine boost or are hungry for a full meal, you’re sure to find Mat Hatter’s as delightful as we do!

The Roof at the Durham

315 E Chapel Hill St

Want to see Bull City from a new perspective? Take the elevator up a few flights at the Durham to reach The Roof, a glamorous bar with vast views of the Piedmont. Great drinks pair well with the stunning vistas – it’s the perfect spot for date night or girl’s night out. You can do more than just drink atop this rooftop bar, though. The Roof offers regular yoga classes, stargazing events, and story time for kids.
