Fall in Love with Autumn in Durham
There’s nothing quite like Durham in the fall. While much has been written about autumn in New York, the season hits different down south. Bull City comes alive this time of year – it’s time to bust out the cozy sweaters, treat yourself to a pumpkin spice coffee, and enjoy all that downtown Durham has to offer.
Take in the Foliage
Green leaves begin to change over to orange and red starting in September. For the most glorious display of fall colors, though, you’ll want to wait until late October or early November to go leaf peeping. Durham Central Park will be awash with gorgeous foliage in a few weeks, as will the trails at Eno River State Park. Need a fun date idea? Pack a picnic and head to the 55 acres of natural beauty that is the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, rent a kayak and take in the sights from Falls Lake. There’s no shortage of opportunities to enjoy fall’s splendor in Durham!
Embrace Spooky Season
If you love this time of year for the spookiness it evokes, you’ll want to head to the Triangle’s favorite haunt: Haunted Forest at Panic Point. Located just a short drive from downtown Durham, the haunted attraction consistently ranks among North Carolina’s best. If haunted houses aren’t really your thing, try a movie at the Carolina Theatre instead. Their SplatterFlix series features retro horror films that are sure to have you clinging to your date.
Celebrate the Harvest
North Carolina’s best seasonal produce is available in the fall. Whether you head to a farmer’s market, visit a roadside farm stand, or spend the day at a corn maze, be sure to pick up fresh apples, collards, corn, and greens. Pumpkins are also in season, if you’re in the mood for carving. For a full day of harvest celebrations, head to Holder Hill Farm. There, you can grab a pumpkin, go for a hay ride, or find your way through a corn maze.
No matter how you decide to celebrate the season, you’re sure to find no shortage of fall fun in Durham!
