Hidden Gems Around Durham

Finding delicious food, tasty drinks, and fun things to do isn’t hard in Durham. Whether you set out by foot or by car, you can’t travel more than a few feet without discovering something new and exciting around town. If you’ve been in Bull City a while, though, you may be eager to get off the beaten path. Thankfully, there are plenty of hidden gems to explore – if you know where to look.

Duke Lemur Center

3705 Lemur Lane

North Carolina is known for its abundance of wildlife, but lemurs certainly aren’t the first animal that springs to mind when thinking of the Tar Heel State. Many locals are surprised to learn that Durham is actually home to the world’s largest sanctuary for lemurs, lorises, and bush babies. The Duke Lemur Center was established back in 1966, when a group of researchers purchased 85 acres of Duke Forest. Take a tour and learn why these cute creatures are among the most endangered mammals on the planet.

Zweli’s

4600 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd Suite 26

When is the last time you went out for Zimbabwean cuisine? Odds are good you’ve likely never tried piri piri chicken, dovi shrimp, or braised oxtail. Zweli’s offers you the chance to sample it all. Nestled in a strip mall, you’d never know this delicious restaurant even existed – unless you got off the beaten path, that is! Dine in or attend one of their many special events, including cooking classes and drum nights. Even if you’re not the most adventurous foodie, you’re sure to find something to love at Zweli’s.

Satellite Park

414 Gattis St

Durham has no shortage of excellent opportunities to explore nature and take in gorgeous art. Satellite Park blends the two. The green space is home to old satellite dishes that have been repurposed as canvases for beautiful murals. The park is one of the most unique sights around Durham, and is the ideal backdrop for a romantic picnic or walk with little ones.
