The Durham Farmers’ Market

Moving to Downtown Durham? Though you’re in the heart of the Triangle, you can get a bit of the country right in your own backyard! The Durham Farmers’ Market has finally returned to its regular operating schedule, bringing some of the best farmers, vendors, and craftsman to Durham Central Park once again.

With its first opening in 1999 in the parking lot of the old Durham Bulls stadium, the Durham Farmers’ Market now occupies the pavilion at Durham Central Park. When you live at the Vega, the Durham Farmers’ Market is just nextdoor, one of the best benefits of living at downtown’s hottest address.

Hours and Location

The Durham Farmers’ Market is located under a covered pavilion on the corner of Hunt and Foster St downtown…literally one minute walking distance from the Vega. It’s open every week, twice a week: Wednesday 3-6pm (perfect for grabbing dinner after work!) and Saturdays from 8am-12pm.

There’s also a Thanksgiving Market the Tuesday before Turkey Day – this year on the 23rd – and a weekly Winter Market on Saturdays from 10am-12pm. In addition to Christmasy goods and gifts, the Winter Market offers a supply of local, fresh vegetables even in the cold months.

Vendor Highlights

The Durham Farmers’ Market features over 65 vendors, all located within 70 miles of Durham. There are too many to list, but some of our favorites include:

·       Caballo Rojo Coffee: inspired by her Venezuelan grandfather, owner Gabriela Kavanaugh offers locally roasted, ethically sourced coffee through direct trade practices. The roastery also financially supports the International Justice Mission.

·       Haw River Mushrooms: located in charming Saxapahaw, Haw River Mushrooms offers a huge variety of fungi to expand your cooking arsenal. Of particular note is their mushroom jerky, a Vegan-friendly umami snack that’s gotten press from Our State magazine.

·       Fruchtenicht Honey: David Fruchtenicht is as real as it gets: he’s been keeping bees for over 30 years in Durham. His shop is one of the best places in the Triangle to get delicious local honey and handcrafted beeswax candles.
